Brampton is a small market town of about 4,200 people, 16 km east of Carlisle, on the edge of Hadrian's Wall country. The old centre is compact and preserved, with an 1817 octagonal Moot Hall, a Philip Webb church and a ruined priory three miles out. It is not a Lake District base: the lakes are 40-60 km southwest and the town has no bus station, no 5G and a station a mile from the middle. Come for one night with a car, or as a half-day from Carlisle.

Get around
The centre is walkable in 10 minutes end to end. Everything else — the station, Lanercost Priory, Talkin Tarn, the wall — needs a car, a bike or a taxi. Stagecoach bus 685 runs hourly from Carlisle (25 min) and continues every hour or two to Haltwhistle, Hexham and Newcastle. Trains from Carlisle take about 20 min but the halt is a mile southeast of town with no waiting room and no lift to the Carlisle-bound platform.
