- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.
Kannapolis is a small North Carolina city about 15 minutes north of Charlotte by car, built on textiles and known as the Earnhardt family's home town. Its downtown has been rebuilt around the NC Research Campus, a ballpark and a walkable West Avenue strip. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one-night add-on to a Charlotte trip, not a base of its own.

Arrive & move

Getting around
A car is the practical choice: sights sit along US 29 and I-85, and sidewalks between them are patchy. Downtown and West Avenue are walkable once you park. Amtrak's Piedmont and Carolinian stop at 201 South Main Street, and Concord Kannapolis Area Transit (ckrider) links the two cities, but service is thin — check times before relying on it.

Day-trips
Charlotte
goDoor to door: 30–45 min by car; about 30 min by train
Car up I-85, or Amtrak from the Kannapolis station
The obvious pairing: museums, food and nightlife that Kannapolis lacks.
Concord, North Carolina
goDoor to door: 15–20 min by car
Car on I-85, or ckrider bus
Charlotte Motor Speedway and Concord Mills mall; easy half-day.
Salisbury, North Carolina
goDoor to door: 25–30 min by car
Car on I-85 north, or Amtrak
Small historic downtown; pairs well with a Kannapolis morning.
Door to door: About 1 h
Car on I-85 then US 321
Furniture and lake country; better as an overnight than a return day.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Cloverleaf Parkway (I-85 exit 60 area)
Chain hotels and extended-stay suites by the interstate; easiest with a car.
Downtown / West Avenue
Walkable to the ballpark, breweries and restaurants; very few beds, so book early.

Watch out
Safety

- Summer afternoons are hot and humid; do outdoor sights before noon.
- Game nights and the Christmas lights draw crowds — parking near Village Park fills up.
- Public transit runs limited hours; do not count on a late bus back from Concord.
