Kannapolis is a small North Carolina city about 15 minutes north of Charlotte by car, built on textiles and known as the Earnhardt family's home town. Its downtown has been rebuilt around the NC Research Campus, a ballpark and a walkable West Avenue strip. Most travellers see it as a half-day or one-night add-on to a Charlotte trip, not a base of its own.

Get around
A car is the practical choice: sights sit along US 29 and I-85, and sidewalks between them are patchy. Downtown and West Avenue are walkable once you park. Amtrak's Piedmont and Carolinian stop at 201 South Main Street, and Concord Kannapolis Area Transit (ckrider) links the two cities, but service is thin — check times before relying on it.
