MendocinoMendocino Village
Stay 2 nights: one full day for the village and Headlands, one for a redwood or lighthouse run. Skip it as a day trip from San Francisco — 3.5–4 h each way.
Mendocino is a small coastal village of about 900 people on a headland above the Pacific, 165 mi (265 km) north of San Francisco. It is a weekend base, not a sightseeing checklist: the walkable core takes an afternoon, and the value is in the bluffs, the state parks and the food. Two nights covers it; three if you add a redwood detour.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
The village is walkable — several blocks north to south, with the Headlands bluffs about a half-mile from the east side. You need a car for beaches, Point Cabrillo, the redwoods and Fort Bragg. Mendocino Transit Authority Route 60 (The Coaster) runs twice daily along the coast between Fort Bragg and Albion via Mendocino and Little River, $3–4 a ride. Mountain bikes are another option on the flat Big River road.

Day-trips
Door to door: About 20–30 min
Drive Highway 1 north, about 15 min; or MTA Route 60, twice daily
Bigger town: working harbour, more motels and cheaper food. Pair it with the Skunk Train or the coastal trail.
Point Cabrillo Light Station
goDoor to door: About 20 min
Drive 2.5 mi north of the village, then walk about 0.5 mi from the parking area
Lighthouse, headlands and a small museum; also rentable as lodging. Go early for parking.
Big River estuary
goDoor to door: 5 min
Walk or drive to 1 S Big River Rd, on the Stanford Inn grounds
Flat 8-mi estuary trail; redwood outrigger canoe and kayak rentals, $55 adult for three hours.
Van Damme and Russian Gulch state parks
goDoor to door: 10–15 min
Drive south on Highway 1, 3–6 mi
Short walks to bluffs, a pygmy forest and a collapsed sea cave; day-use fee applies.
Anderson Valley wineries (Boonville)
cautionDoor to door: About 1 h
Highway 128 east from the coast, about 45 min
Tasting rooms are spread out and hours are limited; pick two or three and check openings. Do not drive after tasting.
Point Arena
cautionDoor to door: About 1 h
Highway 1 south, about 35 mi
Lighthouse and the historic Arena Theater; a long half-day, better as an overnight if you are heading south.
Gualala
skipDoor to door: About 1.5 h
Highway 1 south, about 50 mi
Too far for a return day from Mendocino; stop only if you are driving south.
Door to door: 1.5–2 h
Highway 20 east from Fort Bragg, or Highway 128/101
Inland towns with services and the Skunk Train terminus; no reason to day-trip from the coast.

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.
Mendocino Village core (Main, Ukiah, Kasten, Albion streets)
Walk to dinner, galleries and the Headlands trailhead. Inns here are the priciest and book out on summer and holiday weekends.
North of the village on Highway 1 (Glendeven, Sea Rock, Agate Cove)
1–2 mi out; ocean-view rooms and cottages, still a short drive or 20–30 min walk to the core.
Little River and Albion (3–5 mi south)
Cheaper and quieter; you need a car for dinner in the village. Little River Lodging is under the same owners as Sweetwater.
Fort Bragg (8 mi north)
More motels, more restaurants, lower rates; a 15-min drive to Mendocino.

Watch out
Safety
- Highway 1 is slow and winding; a 165-mi drive from San Francisco takes 3.5–4 h, longer on Friday afternoons and holiday weekends.
- Coastal fog and wind arrive most afternoons even in summer — bring a layer for the Headlands.
- Cell coverage and Wi-Fi are patchy outside the village; download maps before you leave the Bay Area.
- Summer and holiday weekends sell out weeks ahead and rates jump; midweek and Nov–Apr are cheaper but wetter.
- Downtown sidewalks and curbs are uneven and steep in places; alternate routes usually exist for mobility limits.
- Ticks and poison oak on coastal trails; check yourself after hikes.
