Vijayawada is Andhra Pradesh's second city and a big South Coast Railway junction, on the Krishna River opposite the state capital Amaravati. The Kanaka Durga Temple on Indrakeeladri hill is the reason most people stop. Sights sit close to the river and the MG Road spine, so a single full day covers the core; a second day buys you the river island, the rock-cut caves and Amaravati across the barrage.

Getting around

Auto-rickshaws are the main way around and have no meters: agree the fare before you get in, or use the pre-paid auto kiosks at the railway station and bus station, where you get a printed or written slip and the driver cannot charge more. App cabs (Ola) work in the city. APSRTC city buses cover most areas but are crowded at the 8:30 am and 4:30–7:30 pm peaks; keep small change for the conductor. Cycle rickshaws still exist but are rare.

Safety

Vijayawada is a busy, largely safe city; the real risks are auto-rickshaw fare disputes, summer heat and monsoon rain. Use pre-paid auto kiosks, keep small notes, and avoid unlit riverfront paths after dark.
  • Agree every auto fare before boarding; without a price the driver sets it afterwards.
  • April to June is brutally hot — plan temple and hill visits before 9 am.
  • Monsoon (Jul–Sep) brings heavy rain and slick temple steps.
  • Temple rules: shoes off, and dress modestly; check current phone and camera rules at the entrance.
  • Buses at peak hours are packed; avoid boarding a full one.
  • Drink sealed water and eat freshly cooked food; stomach trouble is the most common travel complaint here.
