Turangi
Stay 1 night for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing or as a stopover on SH1 between Taupō and National Park; 2 only if you are fishing or walking the river.
Turangi is a small town of about 3,300 at the southern end of Lake Taupō, on State Highway 1. It exists for two reasons: the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, whose Mangatepopo start is about 45 minutes away, and the Tongariro River, one of the best year-round trout fisheries in the country. There is no town centre to wander; you come here to sleep cheaply near the trail and to fish, raft or walk the river.

- Oceania ↗Oceania's island states guard their farms and reefs at the border: tick 'yes' on the arrival card for any food, plant, animal product, soil or used outdoor gear, and let the officer decide.
- Oceania ↗Across the tropical South Pacific, cyclones are possible from November to April: choose insurance that covers weather delays and keep one spare night before a long-haul departure.
- Australia and New Zealand ↗Both countries drive on the left, with long distances between fuel stops in the outback and on New Zealand's back roads; fatigue causes more visitor crashes than speed.
- New Zealand ↗Visa-waiver visitors need an NZeTA (with the tourism levy) before travel, including many transit passengers; others need a visa. Apply only through Immigration New Zealand or its official app, and check the rules for your passport.
- New Zealand ↗Declare all food, plant and animal products, and used outdoor gear such as hiking boots and tents, on the New Zealand Traveller Declaration; undeclared risk items bring instant fines.
- New Zealand ↗Drive on the left; give way as signed at one-lane bridges; an English-language licence or one with an approved translation or International Driving Permit is required.
- New Zealand ↗Freedom camping is restricted: sleep in a vehicle only where signed as allowed, and in many places only in certified self-contained vehicles.

Getting around
You need a car or a shuttle. The town is small enough to walk, but the Alpine Crossing start (Mangatepopo) and finish (Ketetahi) are 20–45 min away by road. Shuttle operators run from Turangi to both ends; check current operators, times and fares before you book. The Ketetahi-to-Mangatepopo transfer for people who parked at the start is about NZ$35 adult, NZ$25 child (check). InterCity coaches stop in town on the Auckland–Wellington route, about three services a day each way.
