Turangi
Stay 1 night for the Tongariro Alpine Crossing or as a stopover on SH1 between Taupō and National Park; 2 only if you are fishing or walking the river.
Turangi is a small town of about 3,300 at the southern end of Lake Taupō, on State Highway 1. It exists for two reasons: the Tongariro Alpine Crossing, whose Mangatepopo start is about 45 minutes away, and the Tongariro River, one of the best year-round trout fisheries in the country. There is no town centre to wander; you come here to sleep cheaply near the trail and to fish, raft or walk the river.

Etiquette, safety and scams
Etiquette
- Greeting: Kia ora or a handshake; first names from the start; avoid: Formal titles; overlong small talk before business
- Marae visit: Wait to be called on, follow your guide through the pōwhiri, remove shoes before the meeting house; avoid: Eating or drinking inside the wharenui; walking in front of speakers
- Tables and heads: Keep bottoms off tables and hats off tables; food stays away from heads; avoid: Sitting on tables or kitchen benches; touching people's heads
- Roads: Pull over at slow-vehicle bays to let queues pass; wave thanks; avoid: Stopping on the road for photos; drifting right after a stop
- Outdoors: Carry out all rubbish; use toilets; stick to tracks; avoid: Feeding kea and other birds; toileting outside
- Talk: Self-deprecating humour and understatement; avoid: Calling New Zealanders Australians; boasting
- Home visit: Bring wine or something to share; shoes off if the hosts do; avoid: Arriving empty-handed to a 'bring a plate' event
- Names: Use Māori place names and pronounce them with care; avoid: Joking about Māori words or haka
Scams and watch-outs
- The Tongariro Alpine Crossing is a 19.4 km one-way walk with no exit in the middle; turn back if weather closes in, and do not rely on phone signal.
- In winter the crossing can be snow and ice: check current DOC conditions and requirements before you go, and go guided with crampons and an ice axe if conditions demand it.
- One-lane bridges on SH1 and side roads: slow down and give way as signed.
- Fuel up in Turangi or Taupō; the next services south are at Waiouru, about 45 min away.
- Weather changes fast at this altitude even in summer: carry a rain shell, warm layer and water.
Turangi is a small, low-crime town and safe for tourists. The real risks are on the mountain: weather, cold water in the river and long drives on SH1 after dark.
