Benin City is the capital of Edo State and the seat of the Oba of Benin, with a royal history that predates the British conquest of 1897. The sights cluster around the King's Square museum and palace area, the markets sit north of the centre, and the airport is a short hop from Lagos. Getting around
Taxis and minibuses are the main way around; most routes funnel through the Ring Road, so a cross-town trip often means two vehicles. Hailing apps (Bolt, Uber) work in the city and are the easiest option for visitors. Commercial motorbikes are banned 19:00–06:00. Tell the driver 'stop' or 'drop' at your destination — there are no formal bus stops.

- Some routes are riskier after dark; use a hailing app at night rather than flagging a taxi.
