Benin City

Benin City is the capital of Edo State and the seat of the Oba of Benin, with a royal history that predates the British conquest of 1897. The sights cluster around the King's Square museum and palace area, the markets sit north of the centre, and the airport is a short hop from Lagos. Two nights covers the core; add a day for Okomu National Park if you have a car and a guide.

Get around

Taxis and minibuses are the main way around; most routes funnel through the Ring Road, so a cross-town trip often means two vehicles. Hailing apps (Bolt, Uber) work in the city and are the easiest option for visitors. Commercial motorbikes are banned 19:00–06:00. Tell the driver 'stop' or 'drop' at your destination — there are no formal bus stops.

Scams and watch-outs

  • Roads in the city are uneven and traffic rules are loosely enforced; jams are common at peak times.
  • Some routes are riskier after dark; use a hailing app at night rather than flagging a taxi.
  • Commercial motorbikes are banned between 19:00 and 06:00.
  • You usually cannot enter the Royal Palace, and the fence blocks most of the view from outside.
  • Okomu National Park directions are unclear — contact the park service before setting out.

Benin City is a working Nigerian state capital: petty theft and traffic are the everyday risks, and some routes are best avoided after dark. Use a hailing app at night, keep valuables out of sight in markets, and check your government's state-by-state advice before you travel.
