Kumlinge is a small Åland municipality of about 330 residents spread over four inhabited islands, reached only by the Ålandstrafiken ferries on the Northern and Cross lines. There is one stone church, a handful of trails, a grocery store and a few cottages. It suits slow cyclists and ferry-hoppers, not sightseers on a schedule.

Getting around

Bike: the islands are flat and traffic is very low, and the distance between Kumlinge and Snäckö harbours is 11 km. Accommodation rents bikes. Walking works but distances between houses are long. A free shared taxi is scheduled on weekdays to and from the ferry harbours on Kumlinge and Seglinge, timed to the ferries; it must be booked by 20:00 the day before, and off the main road it costs €1–3 — confirm current service and availability (check). Seglinge is linked to Snäckö by a free cable ferry, about every 30 min in summer.

Safety

Very low crime; the real risks are ticks (TBE and borreliosis), vipers on trails, and getting stranded when the last ferry of the day leaves without you.
  • Ticks are abundant and carry TBE (the 'Kumlinge disease') and borreliosis; check advice before you go and consider TBE vaccination for nature time.
  • Poisonous vipers are common on the nature trails.
  • Ferry fares apply to vehicles, not foot passengers; cars need a reservation and the cheaper archipelago fare requires an overnight stay in Åland.
  • Some Northern Line departures call at Enklinge only if booked in advance.
  • Few services outside summer; check store and museum opening before you rely on them.
