Albuquerque is New Mexico's only big city and its main airport, sitting at 1,500 m in the Rio Grande valley under the Sandia Mountains. Old Town, the Route 66 strip on Central Avenue and the museums fill two days; the October balloon festival is the one date worth planning a trip around. Most travellers use it as a base and day-trip north to Santa Fe by train.

Getting around

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread over 30 km and buses are thin outside Central Avenue. ABQ Ride is free, and the ART red and green lines run frequently along Central Avenue past Old Town, Downtown, UNM and Nob Hill; bus 50 links the airport to Downtown Monday–Saturday. The Rail Runner commuter train runs from Downtown to Bernalillo, Los Lunas and Belen, and on to Santa Fe. Cycling is fine on the Paseo del Bosque trail but risky on major streets without lanes.

Safety

Albuquerque is fine by day in the tourist districts but has a real property-crime rate: don't leave anything visible in a parked car, avoid walking alone at night away from Central Avenue, and treat the International District and parts of the South Valley with normal city caution.
  • Summer afternoons hit 35 °C and July–August brings short, heavy monsoon storms.
  • Winter snow is rare but paralyses local drivers: if it snows, stay off the interstates.
  • I-25 south of the city is a higher-fine safety corridor; take the speed limit seriously.
  • Hand-held phone use while driving is illegal in Albuquerque.
  • High-desert sun and 1,500 m elevation burn and dehydrate faster than you expect.
