Albuquerque is New Mexico's only big city and its main airport, sitting at 1,500 m in the Rio Grande valley under the Sandia Mountains. Old Town, the Route 66 strip on Central Avenue and the museums fill two days; the October balloon festival is the one date worth planning a trip around. Most travellers use it as a base and day-trip north to Santa Fe by train.

A car is the practical choice: sights are spread over 30 km and buses are thin outside Central Avenue. ABQ Ride is free, and the ART red and green lines run frequently along Central Avenue past Old Town, Downtown, UNM and Nob Hill; bus 50 links the airport to Downtown Monday–Saturday. The Rail Runner commuter train runs from Downtown to Bernalillo, Los Lunas and Belen, and on to Santa Fe.
