San BrunoSan Bruno, California
Sleep here for an early SFO flight, not to sightsee: 1 night, BART or Caltrain to the city, walk the Avenue for dinner.
San Bruno is a small Peninsula city wedged between South San Francisco and Millbrae, minutes from San Francisco International Airport and on both BART and Caltrain. It is a practical base for a flight morning or a cheap bed near the airport, with a compact downtown strip, a mall at Tanforan and ridge hiking at Sweeney Ridge. Sightseeing is thin: most travellers use it as a bed, not a destination.

- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
- United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
- United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
- United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around
BART (San Bruno station) and Caltrain (San Bruno station) both run to San Francisco and south to Millbrae and San Jose; SamTrans buses cover the county. Downtown is walkable; the airport strip is not, so use a hotel shuttle or a short taxi. A car helps only for Sweeney Ridge and Junipero Serra Park.

Watch out
Safety
- Hotel shuttles run on set schedules: confirm the last pickup before a late arrival.
- BART stops running around midnight; a taxi from SFO is the fallback.
- Sweeney Ridge has no water and little shade: carry your own and go early.
- Fog and wind on the ridge can drop the temperature fast even in summer.
