Half a day to one night: see Goyazan Mountain and the border lakes, then move on to Ganja or Sheki. Not a base.

Qazakh is a small city in western Azerbaijan, 10 km from the Armenia border. It has a few natural sights — Goyazan Mountain, Didevan Lake, a hot spring hamam — but no major museums or nightlife. Most travellers use it as a short stop between Ganja and Georgia, or as a day trip from Ganja.

  • Caucasus ↗The Armenia–Azerbaijan and Armenia–Türkiye land borders are closed; any route that crosses them is not a route, however short it looks.
  • Caucasus ↗Georgia treats entry to Abkhazia or South Ossetia from Russia as illegal; entering that way can mean arrest or a ban when you next reach Georgia proper.
  • Azerbaijan ↗Apply for the e-visa only on the official portal (ASAN Visa); lookalike sites charge extra.
  • Azerbaijan ↗Azerbaijan's land border with Armenia is closed to ordinary travellers, and several governments advise against travel near it and in the former conflict areas because of mines and military zones. Read your own government's current advice before you book anything outside Baku and Absheron.
  • Azerbaijan ↗Do not photograph military sites, government buildings or oil and gas installations; drones need a permit.

Watch out

Safety

Qazakh is safe for day use. The main risk is the Armenia border: do not cross the fence, do not photograph military areas. Climb Goyazan Mountain with a local guide. Avoid Abbasbeyli Lake after dark.
  • Stay away from the Armenia border fence: do not cross or photograph military posts.
  • Didevan Lake is safe by day but avoid evenings near Abbasbeyli Lake.
  • Goyazan Mountain: climb with a local guide, not alone.
