Best tours in Prague: walking, food and day tours

Prague rewards walking, and the classic loop — Old Town Square, the Astronomical Clock, Charles Bridge, Malá Strana, Prague Castle — is best done once with a guide who explains the layers, then again on your own at your own pace. A 2–3 hour walking tour covers the geography and the history in one go, which saves you a day of backtracking later.

Beyond that, choose by what you cannot do yourself. Food and beer tours work because a guide orders, translates and gets you into places you would not find. Day tours to Kutná Hora and Terezín work because the sites are spread out and the transport eats time. River cruises are a view, not a tour; book only if you want the photo from the water.

Skip anything that bundles a 'traditional Czech dinner' with a folklore show unless that is the evening you want; the food is usually the weakest part of the package.

Most walking tours run two or three times a day, morning and early afternoon, with a later slot in summer. Free tours usually start around 10:00 and 14:00 and last about two hours; you tip the guide at the end, and 200–400 CZK per person is the normal range. Food and beer tours run in the late afternoon or evening, three to four hours, and include tastings in the price.

Day tours to Kutná Hora and Terezín leave in the morning and return by mid-afternoon. Kutná Hora is about an hour from Prague by train; Terezín is reached by bus from the city, roughly an hour. Tours include transport, which is the main reason to take them over doing it yourself.

Castle interiors are the one thing to book as a timed ticket rather than a tour: the circuit through St Vitus Cathedral, the Old Royal Palace and Golden Lane takes two to three hours, and summer slots sell out. Check current prices and opening hours on the official castle site before you go.

Walking tours meet in Old Town Square or at the Astronomical Clock, both a short walk from most central hotels and from the Staroměstská and Můstek metro stations. Arrive ten minutes early; guides leave on time and groups move fast through the crowds.

For day tours, operators usually pick up near the centre or meet at a central point such as Wenceslas Square or the Powder Tower. If you go independently, trains to Kutná Hora leave from Prague's main station and take about an hour; buses to Terezín leave from the city and take about an hour. Buy return tickets before you leave, as the last connections back fill in the afternoon.

If you are flying in, book tours for your second day, not your first: jet lag plus a two-hour walk in the sun is a bad combination. Check your arrival time before you commit to a morning departure.
