The Portland metro is Portland plus four suburban counties — Multnomah (east side), Washington County (west, high-tech and wineries), Clackamas (south, Oregon City and Lake Oswego) and Clark County across the river in Washington state. TriMet's MAX light rail and frequent buses cover the core and the airport well; the westside and rural edges need a car or a Community Connector shuttle. Base yourself in Portland and treat the suburbs as half-day trips.
