Petrópolis is a hill town in the Serra dos Órgãos, 65 km from Rio de Janeiro and about 1.5–2 h by road. It was the summer capital of the Brazilian empire, and the historic centre is compact enough to see on foot in a day. Most travellers come for one night or as a day trip from Rio; two nights only if you want the mountain trails and the Quitandinha area.

Getting around

The historic centre is walkable: Museu Imperial, the cathedral, Palácio de Cristal and Casa de Santos Dumont are all within about 20 minutes on foot. Local buses 100 and 010 link the centre with the Bingen bus station; the fare is around R$4–6 (2026 estimate, check). Use Uber or a taxi for Quitandinha and the outer neighbourhoods. There is no rail service into Petrópolis.

Watch out

Safety

Petrópolis is calm by Brazilian big-city standards; the real risks are mountain-road rain and landslides in summer, plus pickpocketing around the bus station and crowded centre streets at night. Use Uber after dark rather than walking back to Bingen.
  • The only way in is by road: the Rio–Petrópolis climb can take 2 h+ on Friday evenings and holiday weekends.
  • Many restaurants close Monday to Wednesday or Monday to Thursday: check before you walk.
  • Summer (Dec–Mar) brings sudden heavy rain and landslides on the mountain roads.
  • The intercity bus station is in Bingen, about 10 km from the centre: budget a local bus or taxi on arrival.
