São João de Meriti
Spend a half‑day in São João de Meriti, see Praça da Matriz and Feirinha da Pavuna; no need to stay overnight.
São João de Meriti is a dense suburb of Rio de Janeiro with a compact centre. The main sights – Praça da Matriz, Igreja de São João Batista, the old Rio d'Ouro railway remnants and the Pavuna street market – are within walking distance, so a few hours suffice. Overnight accommodation is only needed if you plan to explore further neighbourhoods or use the city as a base for the Baixada Fluminense region.
