Perth and Kinross is the seam where lowland Scotland meets the Highlands: broad farming valleys in the south and east, moorland and Munros to the north and west. Perth is the transport hub — nearly every train and bus passes through it — so it works as a base for the glens, castles and distilleries around it. Staying out in Pitlochry, Dunkeld or Aberfeldy buys you mornings in the hills but costs you connections, and a car decides most of it.

A car is the practical choice for anywhere off the A9 and Tay valley corridor; buses fan out from Perth but thin out fast, and Blair Atholl, Crieff and Aberfeldy are awkward without one.
Hill weather turns fast — sleet in summer is possible; check forecasts before higher roads such as the A93 over Glenshee.
The Hermitage glen above Birnam loses its sunlight by early afternoon; go by midday.
Loch Leven castle is reached by small boat — check sailing times before you travel, or you may see the loch and not the castle.
Midges are worst on still, damp evenings in July and August, especially near water and in the glens.
