Wells Gray is British Columbia's fourth-largest park, a 5,250 km² block of Cariboo Mountains forest, glacier and alpine meadow west of the Rockies. Almost everyone sees it from one road: Clearwater Valley Road runs 68 km north from Clearwater to Clearwater Lake, and the waterfalls, viewpoints and short trails sit along it. The rest of the park — Murtle Lake, Mahood Lake, the volcanic flow, the high country — needs a rough road, a canoe or days on foot.

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- Helmcken, Spahats and Dawson falls viewpoints are a short, mostly level walk from parking.
- The corridor road is paved to the Helmcken junction, then gravel; the far campgrounds and Murtle Lake are not suitable for low-clearance vehicles or limited mobility.
- The visitor centre in Clearwater has staff who can advise on the easiest viewpoints.
Visiting lightly
- Pack out everything; there are no bins at most trailheads.
- Use the fire rings provided and respect campfire bans — the valley forest burns.
- Keep to marked trails at the falls; the canyon rims are unstable.
- On Murtle Lake, use the portage trail and leave no trace at campsites.

How much does it cost to enter Wells Gray Provincial Park?
Nothing. There is no entry fee for BC provincial parks, and no pass is needed to drive the corridor road or walk the day trails. You pay only for camping (about CAD 20–23 per party per night frontcountry, 2026 estimate) and for extras such as a Clearwater Lake boat tour.
What are the best hikes in Wells Gray Provincial Park?
For most visitors the best short walks are Moul Falls (about 6 km return, the one fall you can stand behind), the flat viewpoint paths at Spahats Creek, Dawson and Helmcken falls, and the Trophy Mountain meadows in July. Longer options are the Murtle Lake portage and multi-day routes into the backcountry, which need registration.
When is the best time to visit Wells Gray Provincial Park?
July to September. July and August give warm days and full waterfall flow but also mosquitoes and crowds at Helmcken; September brings clear, cooler days and far fewer people. May and June are often wet, and the corridor road is effectively out of season from November to April.
Do I need a reservation to camp?
Yes for frontcountry sites at Clearwater Lake, Falls Creek and Pyramid — book through BC Parks, especially for July and August weekends. Backcountry campers self-register and pay at the fee station or online.
Can I see the park without hiking?
Yes. Drive Clearwater Valley Road from Clearwater: Spahats Creek Falls is 11 km in, Dawson Falls and The Mushbowl about 40 km, and Helmcken Falls 46 km, all with car parks and short paths. Clearwater Lake is 68 km in at the end of the road.
How do I avoid the crowds at Helmcken Falls?
Arrive before 10:00 or after 16:00, and visit in September rather than July or August. The tour buses and day-trippers from Kamloops cluster in the middle of the day; Moul Falls and the Mahood Lake side stay quiet all season.
