Herschel Island – Qikiqtaruk Territorial ParkQikiqtaruk

Go only if you can absorb a 2–5 day weather delay: fly or boat in from Inuvik in July–August, walk the tundra routes from Pauline Cove with a ranger, and treat the island as a day-hike base, not a trail network.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • Canada ↗Visa-exempt travellers flying to or through Canada usually need an eTA; check your passport on the official Government of Canada site (canada.ca) and apply only there.
  • Canada ↗A Parks Canada pass is needed to stop in national parks such as Banff and Jasper; some spots (for example Moraine Lake) are reached only by shuttle or tour, so book ahead.
  • Canada ↗Keep well away from bears, elk and moose; carry bear spray on Rockies trails and follow trail closures.
  • Yukon ↗Legal drinking age is 19. Some communities are officially dry — bringing alcohol in can be illegal.
  • Yukon ↗Fuel stops can be more than 200 km apart; fill up when you can and carry water.
  • Yukon ↗Yukon stays on one time zone (UTC−7) year-round — no daylight saving.

Herschel Island – Qikiqtaruk is Yukon's only offshore island, 5 km out in the Beaufort Sea, and the whole 116 km² island is a territorial park. There is no road and no scheduled service: you charter a small aircraft from Inuvik or a boat from a Mackenzie Delta community, and the park is open only from mid-June to mid-September. Pauline Cove holds the 1893 Community House, believed to be the oldest frame building in Yukon and now the park office and visitor centre, plus standing Pacific Steam Whaling Company structures from the 1890s bowhead whaling years. Inuvialuit have used Qikiqtaruk for generations and still do; local rangers at Pauline Cove explain that history and brief walkers. The island's dry polar climate supports at least 94 recorded bird species, about 40 of them breeding, and the largest black guillemot colony in the western Arctic, nesting in the old mission house. There is no trail network — walking is on designated tundra routes, wet underfoot even in July, with polar bears on the coast and fog that can ground flights for days.

Park rules

Drones, guides, camping and more

Historic structures
Do not enter or alter the whaling-era buildings beyond the visitor centre; they are protected heritage.
Fires and waste
No fires; pack out everything you bring in.

Where to stay

Hotels and guesthouses on the mainland; the usual base before and after a charter.

Safety

Fog delaying flights for days high

Carry food, fuel and gear for at least 2–5 extra days; late summer is worst.

Polar bears high

Travel with a ranger or armed guide where possible; keep a clean camp and never store food in tents.

Cold, wet tundra walking medium

Waterproof boots and layers; the ground is boggy even in July.

No medical or rescue services on the island high

Carry a satellite messenger; rescue depends on weather and aircraft availability.

Time out

Finding the local time zone…

Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.

Accessibility

  • There are no paved paths or vehicle access; the tundra routes are uneven and not suitable for limited mobility.
  • The Pauline Cove area around the visitor centre has short, relatively level walks.

Visiting lightly

  • Follow ranger routes to protect slow-growing tundra plants.
  • Keep distance from the guillemot colony and other nesting birds.
  • Pack out all waste; there is no collection on the island.
  • Buy supplies in Inuvik and use local charter operators so the region benefits.

Questions people ask

How much does it cost to enter Herschel Island?

No entry fee is published for Qikiqtaruk Territorial Park; confirm with Yukon Parks before you travel (check). The real cost is transport: a charter aircraft from Inuvik is roughly CAD 4,000–9,000 per aircraft in 2026, and a boat charter from a Mackenzie Delta community is similar.

What are the best hikes in Herschel Island?

There is no formal trail network. The usual walks are the Pauline Cove historic circuit (1–2 h), a tundra route to the island's north side (3–5 h, wet and unmarked), and coastal beach walks. Rangers at Pauline Cove brief you and mark designated routes.

When is the best time to visit Herschel Island?

July and August. The park opens mid-June and closes mid-September, the island is ice-locked from November to early June, and late summer brings fog that can delay flights for days.

How do I get to Herschel Island?

Charter a small aircraft from Inuvik (about 1–1.5 h) or a boat from a Mackenzie Delta community. There are no scheduled flights and no road. Firth River rafters and kayakers can finish here if they pre-arrange the return.

Can I camp on the island?

Yes, at Pauline Cove near the ranger base, in season. There are no services: bring all food, fuel and water treatment, and pack out all waste. Confirm current camping rules with Yukon Parks (check).

Do I need a guide?

Not for the Pauline Cove area, but rangers lead walks and brief independent walkers. Travel with a ranger or armed guide where possible because polar bears use the coast.
