- North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
- North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
- North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
- Mexico ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Mexico's National Migration Institute (INM) or your nearest Mexican consulate; keep proof of your entry (stamp or digital record) until you leave.
- Mexico ↗Security advice differs by state: some governments advise against travel to parts of several states. Check your own government's advice for each region on your route.

Cañada de la Virgen is a small Otomí ceremonial centre on a dry plain about 30 km from San Miguel de Allende, built around AD 540 and aligned to the sun, moon and Venus. INAH secured the zone and opened a site museum and formal visitor programme in 2017, and since then entry has meant a shuttle from the Km 9.5 gate on the San Miguel–Guanajuato road plus a guided walk of the excavated groups. The astronomy, not the size of the mounds, is the reason to come: the House of the Thirteen Heavens lines up with the solstices and with the planting and harvest dates. There is no independent hiking here — the visit is 1.5–2 hours on rocky, uneven ground, best in the dry months from November to May.

Why go
- An Otomí ceremonial centre built around AD 540 and aligned to the sun, moon and Venus — the astronomy is the reason to come, not the size of the mounds.
- Only guided tours are allowed, so you get an INAH archaeologist or a trained guide explaining the alignments as you walk.
- It is a half-day from San Miguel de Allende, which makes it the easiest ancient site to add to a Guanajuato colonial trip.
- The site museum is included with admission and explains the excavation before or after the walk.

Time out
Finding the local time zone…
Times are local to the spot (zone loading). The half-hour margin is our rule of thumb, not an official figure; light fades earlier in forest or under cloud. Carry a headlamp on any route that could run late.
Accessibility
- The site is rocky and uneven with no step-free route; the shuttle and paths are not suitable for limited mobility.
- The museum is the easiest part of the visit; ask staff about the shortest route.
Visiting lightly
- Book with operators that use INAH guides and do not enter closed areas.
- Carry out all rubbish; there is nothing to buy on site.
- Do not touch or climb the structures — the stone is fragile.
