Palolem is a curved bay at Goa's southern end, about 3 km from Canacona's Chaudi bus stand and 5 minutes from Canacona railway station. The water is shallow and calm, the beach is small enough to cross on foot, and the trade is beach shacks, boat trips and long walks. It is a base for Agonda, Patnem and Cotigao, not a sightseeing city. Three nights covers the beach, one boat morning and one inland day; two nights is enough if you only want the sand.

Getting around

The village and beach are walkable. Scooters and bicycles are hired on the main street (scooters around ₹300–500 per day; you usually hand over an original ID and return by morning). Auto-rickshaws run local hops from about ₹80–100 and taxis cost more; agree the fare first. Buses from Margao to Canacona take about 90 minutes; from Chaudi bus stand an auto to the beach is about ₹100.

Watch out

Safety

Palolem is a low-crime beach village; the real risks are the sea at high tide, slippery rocks at Butterfly Island, unlit beach walks at night, and cash — there is no ATM at the beach.
  • No ATM at the beach: the nearest is about 2 km away and Chaudi, 10 minutes by road, has several — carry cash.
  • Beach sellers and touts at the parking area are persistent; a firm, polite no works, and shops are often cheaper than beach sellers.
  • The beach narrows at high tide where shacks jut out; you may have to detour inland.
  • Walking to Butterfly Island is only possible at low tide, over slippery rocks — people have been injured; carry water.
  • Boat prices are negotiable: talk to three or four boatmen before agreeing.
  • Monsoon (Jun–Sep) closes or dismantles many beach shacks; check what is open before booking.
