Palmer Lake

Base in Colorado Springs or Monument and come up for a half-day: the lake, the Santa Fe Trail and a meal on Hwy 105. Sleep here only if you want a quiet night.

Palmer Lake is a small town on the Palmer Divide, about 20 miles north of Colorado Springs and 5 miles northwest of Monument, at roughly 7,200 ft. It is a trailhead town, not a sightseeing town: the Santa Fe Regional Trail, the reservoirs above town, Spruce Mountain and Greenland open spaces, plus a short strip of restaurants on Hwy 105. Most travellers see it as a half-day or a quiet one-night stop between Colorado Springs and Denver.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the realistic option: exit I-25 at County Line Road, go west under two miles, then left on Hwy 105 into downtown. There is no local bus; the Colorado Springs–Denver airport shuttle stops at the Monument park-and-ride, about a mile-plus walk or a short cab from town. Once here, walk the downtown strip and drive to trailheads.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime small town; the real risks are altitude, fast-changing mountain weather and ice on trails in winter. 911 works everywhere.
  • Altitude: the town sits near 7,200 ft; give the first day to acclimatise and drink more water than usual.
  • Summer afternoon thunderstorms above treeline: start hikes early and be off exposed ridges by early afternoon.
  • Winter ice on the reservoir and Santa Fe Trail sections; traction aids help.
  • Cell coverage is patchy in the surrounding open spaces.
  • Trailhead parking fills on weekend mornings; arrive before 9am.
