Ottawa in May: what to expect

May is Ottawa's transition month. The last snow is long gone, the Rideau Canal is water again rather than ice, and the first genuinely warm afternoons arrive in the second half of the month. Early May can still feel like April: a cold front off the Great Lakes can drop an afternoon to single digits, and evenings near the river stay cool enough for a jacket.

By the last week you can expect long, bright days — daylight runs past 15 hours — and temperatures that make a patio on Elgin Street or a walk along the canal comfortable into the evening. Rain arrives as showers rather than all-day drizzle, so a single waterproof layer is usually enough.

The one thing to plan around is variability. A 15 °C swing between two consecutive days is normal here in May, so pack layers rather than a single heavy coat.

May sits in the sweet spot between the quiet thaw of April and the full summer season. Hotel rates in the city centre are typically well below July and August levels, and you can usually book a downtown room a few weeks out rather than months.

The exceptions are the two weeks of the Canadian Tulip Festival and the Victoria Day long weekend, when the tulip beds at Dow's Lake and Commissioners Park draw large domestic crowds and accommodation tightens. If your trip is built around the flowers, book early; if it is not, avoid those dates for the cheapest rooms.

Weekdays are noticeably quieter than weekends throughout the month, and the ByWard Market and museum district are easy to move through outside the festival period.

The month's anchor event is the Canadian Tulip Festival, which usually runs across the first half of May and traces its origins to tulip bulbs gifted by the Netherlands after the Second World War. Displays concentrate around Dow's Lake and Commissioners Park, with additional plantings along the canal and in Major's Hill Park.

Victoria Day falls on the Monday before 25 May and is a statutory holiday across Canada. In Ottawa it reads as the unofficial start of summer: the first long weekend of warm weather, with fireworks in some years and heavy use of the canal pathways and Gatineau Park trails.

Museums and the Parliament precinct run on their regular schedules, and the outdoor portions of the national sites — the grounds, the locks, the riverside paths — are fully usable by mid-month.

This is the month to be outside. Walk or cycle the Rideau Canal Western Pathway, which is car-free and flat, and take in the tulip beds at Dow's Lake at the same time. The locks at the Ottawa Locks are working again once the canal is open to boats, usually around the Victoria Day weekend.

On Parliament Hill, the grounds and the view over the river are open even when interior tours require booking; check the current arrangements before you go. Major's Hill Park, next to the National Gallery, gives the classic skyline view and is planted with tulips in season.

Across the river, Gatineau Park is a short drive or bus ride from downtown and offers easy spring hikes to viewpoints such as Champlain Lookout. Bring insect repellent from mid-May onward — blackflies are active in the woods.

Rainy days are well covered: the Canadian Museum of History in Gatineau, the National Gallery of Canada, the Canadian War Museum and the Canadian Museum of Nature are all indoor and all in or near the centre.

Pack for two seasons in one trip. A light waterproof shell, a mid-layer fleece or sweater, and a couple of short-sleeve shirts will cover almost every day in May. Comfortable walking shoes matter more than anything else: the centre is compact and you will cover a lot of it on foot.

Add sunglasses and sunscreen — the late-May sun is strong by mid-afternoon — plus insect repellent if Gatineau Park or the Ottawa Valley is on your list. An evening layer is worth having even at the end of the month, because riverside temperatures drop quickly after sunset.

April is colder, wetter and cheaper, with the canal still thawing and few outdoor events; it suits museum-focused trips. June brings warmer, longer days and fuller patios, but also the start of blackfly season in the woods and rising hotel rates.

July is the peak: hot, humid, busy and expensive, with Canada Day on 1 July filling the centre. If you want the outdoor season without peak prices, May and late September are the two best-value windows in Ottawa.
