Ottawa in April: what to expect

April is Ottawa's thaw month. Snowbanks shrink, the Rideau Canal stops being safe to skate and starts being unsafe to walk near, and daytime temperatures climb through the month. Nights still drop near or below freezing, so mornings are icy and afternoons can feel like a different season.

Expect a mix of cold rain, wet snow early on and the occasional warm, clear afternoon. Sunshine is unreliable: some years April is bright and dry, others it rains for a week. Wind off the river makes the waterfront feel colder than the number suggests.

The practical consequence is mud and meltwater. Paths in Gatineau Park and along the Ottawa River are soft or flooded, and some sections close. Check trail conditions before you plan a hike; a paved city walk is the safer April choice.

April sits in Ottawa's low season. Hotels that charge peak rates in July and during Winterlude are at their cheapest, and you can usually book a downtown room a few days ahead without trouble. Weekends are busier than weekdays, and the last weekend of the month starts to fill as tulip visitors arrive.

Museums and galleries are comfortable rather than crowded, which is the main argument for April: the indoor sights that absorb a rainy day — the national museums, the Parliament area, the ByWard Market — are at their easiest. Restaurant reservations are rarely needed outside a Saturday night.

The trade-off is that some seasonal businesses are not running yet. Boat cruises, canal activities and many outdoor operators start in May. If your Ottawa list is mostly outdoor, April gives you a cheaper version of a smaller list.

The month's anchor is the Canadian Tulip Festival, which runs in May but whose groundwork — bulbs planted across the city, Commissioners Park beds, and early varieties — becomes visible in late April. Some years a few beds colour up before the official opening; it depends on the spring.

Easter usually falls in late March or April and brings a long weekend, family visits and higher hotel demand for those specific dates. Check the year's calendar before booking, because an Easter weekend can wipe out the April price advantage.

Beyond that, April is a normal working month in the capital: Parliament sits, the ByWard Market runs its usual schedule, and smaller community events, farmers' market openings and gallery exhibitions fill the calendar. Confirm dates locally, since spring events shift with the weather.

Build an April day around indoor anchors with outdoor gaps between them. The national museums, the Parliament Hill area and the ByWard Market are all walkable from downtown and give you somewhere dry to be when a shower passes. The Rideau Canal towpath is fine for a walk, but stay off the ice and expect closures where meltwater pools.

Gatineau Park is the tempting outdoor option and the riskiest: trails are muddy, some are closed for spring thaw, and the parkway may still be limited. If you go, use maintained gravel or paved routes and check conditions first. The Ottawa River pathways are a better bet for a flat, low-commitment walk.

For a half-day trip, the city's museums and the market district cover a wet afternoon well. Save the long outdoor days — canal cycling, park hikes, river cruises — for May and June, when the infrastructure is running and the ground has dried.

Pack for two seasons in one day. A waterproof shell with a hood matters more than a heavy coat, because the rain is the constant and the cold is manageable. Add a warm mid-layer for mornings and evenings, and shoes with grip — icy patches survive on shaded paths well into April.

Bring a compact umbrella or a hooded jacket rather than both, and a small daypack that keeps a dry layer and a phone dry. If you plan any park time, gaiters or waterproof trousers are worth the space; mud is the defining surface of an Ottawa April.

Sunglasses are not wasted: clear, bright days happen, and the low spring sun off wet pavement is harsh. A refillable bottle works everywhere in the city.

March in Ottawa is still winter: snow, cold nights and Winterlude at the start of the month. It is a better month than April if you want the canal and winter activities, and a worse one if you want to walk around comfortably.

May is the upgrade. Tulips are in full bloom, boat tours and canal activities start, patios open and daytime temperatures reach the high teens. It costs more and is busier, but it is the first month of the year when Ottawa works as an outdoor city.

June adds long days and warm evenings, with the outdoor season fully open. If your dates are flexible and you want Ottawa at its best without July crowds, aim for late May or June rather than April.
