Ottawa in March: what to expect

Ottawa in March sits at the end of winter, not the start of spring. Early in the month the city is still in deep-winter mode: snowbanks along the streets, ice on the canal and overnight temperatures well below freezing. By the last week you get the first mild afternoons, but they arrive with melting snow, slush and puddles rather than green anything.

Expect a wide swing between day and night, and between the start and the end of the month. A sunny afternoon can feel pleasant in a sheltered spot; the same day at 7pm is still coat-and-gloves weather. Wind off the river makes the exposed parts of downtown and Parliament Hill feel colder than the number suggests.

Snow can fall in any week of March, and rain in the final days is normal. The figures below are typical values for the month, not a forecast — check a short-range forecast before you pack.

March is one of the cheapest and quietest months in Ottawa. The Winterlude crowds left in February, the school-break families have gone home, and the tulip-season visitors do not arrive until May. Hotel rooms downtown are easy to find at short notice and often at winter rates, and you will not queue for the major sights.

The trade-off is that some seasonal things are closed or closing. The Rideau Canal Skateway usually ends its season in early March, depending on ice and weather, and outdoor patios, boat cruises and garden attractions are not running yet. Museums, galleries, the ByWard Market and Parliament-area walks are open and comfortable without crowds.

If you are flexible, aim for the second half of the month: slightly milder days, longer daylight and the same low prices.

Ottawa's big winter event, Winterlude, is a February festival, so March is a gap month for city-wide programming. What remains is the tail of the winter season — skating and cross-country skiing while conditions last — plus the regular museum and gallery calendar.

Indoor Ottawa carries March. The national museums along the Ottawa River — history, war, nature, art — are the obvious core of a cold-weather trip, and you can walk between several of them. Parliament Hill and the ByWard Market are still worth a loop on a bright day, with a warm stop every 20 minutes.

If winter sports are your reason for coming, Gatineau Park across the river in Québec is the nearest big area for cross-country skiing and snowshoeing, and it stays in condition through much of March. Check trail status and rentals before you go.

For a half-day out of the city, the Ottawa Valley and the small towns east and west of Ottawa are driveable, but many seasonal attractions are shut until May. Save the day trips for a later visit.

Pack for winter with a waterproof layer. The single most important item is a pair of insulated, waterproof boots with grip — Ottawa's March pavements are a mix of ice, slush and salt, and cold wet feet ruin the day faster than cold air does.

Layer up: thermal base, fleece or wool mid-layer, windproof and water-resistant outer coat, hat, gloves and a scarf. Add sunglasses for bright snow days and a small umbrella or hood for the rain that arrives late in the month. A refillable bottle and a warm flask are both useful.

February is the festival month: Winterlude and reliable canal skating, with colder weather and higher prices. April is the thaw — muddy, grey and still cold, but with longer days and the first signs of spring. May is when Ottawa turns: tulips along the canal, patios open and the season genuinely starts.

If you are set on Ottawa and want the best weather, aim for May or September. If you want the cheapest and quietest trip and do not mind the cold, March works.
