Oświęcim is a small industrial town 60 km west of Kraków, known worldwide by its German name, Auschwitz. The two preserved camp museums on the west edge are the reason almost everyone comes, and most visitors never enter the town centre. Sleeping here buys you early entry, a shorter day and a look at the ordinary town around the memorial: a market square, a castle, a Jewish museum and a small ice-hockey club.

Getting around

The town centre is walkable in 15 minutes end to end. The camps are about 2 km from the centre and about 2 km from each other, so use a bus, taxi or the free shuttle between Auschwitz I and II. Trains run to Kraków roughly hourly in about 1 h; buses from Kraków take about 90 min.

Watch out

Safety

A quiet, low-crime town; take the usual precautions with valuables in camp crowds, watch unlit paths after dark, and carry water in summer heat at Birkenau. Emergency number 112.
  • Auschwitz-Birkenau entry is by timed, named booking only; without a reservation you may be turned away, and summer slots can sell out weeks ahead (check the official site).
  • The camps are memorial sites: expect bag limits and rules on food and drink at the memorials, and behave accordingly.
  • Oświęcim railway station is 2 km west of the centre, not central; plan the last leg.
  • Some bars and clubs around the square may not post prices: ask before you order.
  • Summer heat and long walking distances at Birkenau: bring water and shade cover.
