Oak IslandOak Island, North Carolina

Stay 2–3 nights for beach days and the lighthouse; 1 night if you are only passing through to Southport or Wilmington.

Oak Island is a small beach town on the southern North Carolina coast, west of the Cape Fear River mouth. It is a car-and-cottage destination: long sand, a 1958 lighthouse at Caswell Beach, colonial ruins at Old Brunswick Town, and seafood shacks along Oak Island Drive. There is no airport and no train, so you drive in, and you drive or bike everywhere once you are here.

  • North America ↗Crossing between the US, Canada and Mexico by land needs your passport even on a day trip; rental cars need the company's written permission to cross, and most US and Canadian rental insurance stops at the Mexican border.
  • North America ↗Cannabis is legal in Canada and in many US states, but taking any amount across the US, Canadian or Mexican border is a federal crime — including edibles and vapes.
  • North America ↗The busiest US and Canadian national parks need timed-entry, campsite or lodge reservations in summer; release dates are months ahead.
  • United States ↗Check whether you need an ESTA (Visa Waiver Program) or a visa on the official CBP and State Department sites; apply only through esta.cbp.dhs.gov, not third-party sites, and allow time before you book.
  • United States ↗Several popular national parks use timed-entry or vehicle reservations in peak season; check each park's page on nps.gov and book on recreation.gov before fixing your dates.
  • United States ↗Medical care is very expensive for visitors; buy travel insurance with high medical cover before you fly.
  • United States ↗Tipping is expected: about 15–20% at sit-down restaurants and bars, and a tip for taxis, hotel staff and guides.

Getting around

A car is the practical default: the island is about 20 km long and services are spread along Oak Island Drive. Bikes work on the flat roads and there are paths in places. There is no useful public bus for visitors; rideshare coverage is thin, especially at night.

Boardwalk, state park and the aquarium at Fort Fisher.

caution

Door to door: About 1.5 h

Areas, not hotels: pick the one that fits your arrival time and plans.

Beachfront (E Beach Drive / W Beach Drive)

Walk to the sand from the door; most rentals are weekly in summer.

Yaupon Beach / mid-island

Near the pier, restaurants and the recreation center; good for a short stay.

Caswell Beach

Quieter, next to the lighthouse and the coast guard station; fewer shops.

Southport (off-island)

Small historic town 15–20 min by car; B&Bs and a walkable waterfront.

Watch out

Safety

A low-crime beach town; the real risks are rip currents, summer heat and hurricanes. Lock your car and rental, and keep an eye on the forecast from August to October.
  • Hurricane season runs Jun–Nov, with the highest risk Aug–Oct: check forecasts and know your evacuation route.
  • Swim near lifeguarded areas; rip currents are the main beach hazard.
  • Some restaurants and rentals close in winter — call ahead in Jan–Feb.
  • Beach driving and bonfires need a permit and are restricted to certain zones: check the town website.
