Northwestern Montana is two trips in one: the Flathead Valley (Whitefish, Kalispell, Flathead Lake) at the west gate of Glacier National Park, and Missoula on I-90 in the Bitterroot valley. They are about 2 hours apart by car. Pick one base unless you have a week. A car is essential: outside the Amtrak stops and the park shuttles, there is no practical way to move between trailheads, lakes and towns.

Glacier in July–August means full lots, shuttle queues and lodging booked months ahead; the same trip in late June or September is calmer.
Secondary and unpaved roads are often closed by snow for over half the year; check Montana DOT road status before setting out.
