Treat this as a 4–7 day add-on, not a first-trip region: fly to Lodwar or drive the Kerio loop, sleep in Kitale or Kabarnet.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
  • East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
  • East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.
  • Kenya ↗Apply for the Kenya eTA only on the official portal (etakenya.go.ke) at least 3 working days before you fly; lookalike sites charge double. Most African passports have been exempt since 2025.
  • Kenya ↗Book a travel-clinic visit several weeks ahead; ask about malaria prevention and check whether a yellow fever vaccination certificate is required for your route, including transits.
  • Kenya ↗Plastic carrier bags are banned; leave shop and duty-free plastic bags behind before you fly in.
  • Kenya ↗Light aircraft to the parks have strict baggage limits, usually soft-sided bags only and a low total weight (often around 15 kg); confirm the limit with your operator and leave a hard case in Nairobi.

The Northern Rift Valley is the dry, sparsely populated half of Kenya's Rift, running from the Kerio escarpment north to Lake Turkana on the Ethiopian border. It is not a lodge-and-game-drive region like the Masai Mara. What it offers is escarpment viewpoints, the UNESCO-listed Kenya Lake System on the Rift floor, Turkana herding culture and the fossil beds of Sibiloi National Park on the lake's east shore. Lake Turkana is the world's largest desert lake; the peoples here are Turkana, Pokot, Samburu and Maasai herders, Kikuyu farmers and Ogiek forest communities on the Mau escarpment. Roads are long and rough, so most travellers either fly to Lodwar or base in Kitale or Kabarnet and day-trip. Give it 4 days for Kitale and the Kerio Valley, 7 or more to add Lodwar and Sibiloi — and only after the classic safari circuit.

4 nights
Kitale 2 + Kabarnet 2, driving the Kerio loop
7 nights
Kitale 2 + Lodwar 2 + Sibiloi 2 + one buffer night
  • Driving Kitale–Lodwar in one day is a full day on rough roads; break it or fly.
  • Fuel and supplies thin out north of Kitale; fill up whenever you can.
  • Lake Turkana's shore is remote — do not travel it without a local guide and a reliable vehicle.

There is no practical luggage-forwarding network here; carry what you need and leave the rest in Nairobi.

Highland Rift (Kitale, Kabarnet, Iten)
Long rains roughly March–May, short rains October–November; cool nights year-round at altitude.
Turkana (Lodwar, Lake Turkana)
Hot and arid all year; the least punishing months are roughly June–September and December–February.

The dry seasons (roughly June–September and December–February) are the practical window for the north; rains can make the Turkana roads impassable.
