The Northern Netherlands is Groningen, Friesland and Drenthe: three provinces that share a flat polder landscape, a slower pace and a good rail spine but sit 2–2.5 hours from Amsterdam by train. Sleep in Groningen for a city base with the best food and nightlife, in Leeuwarden for the Frisian lakes and island ferries, or in Assen for Drenthe's heathland and dolmens. Two beds cover the region; day-tripping it from the west does not.

The Leer–Groningen rail border crossing has been closed by a damaged bridge, with replacement buses; check before planning a Germany arrival.
Mudflat hiking is only with a licensed guide and only at low tide; it is unsuitable for anyone with mobility problems.

Groningen / Friesland / Drenthe: Slightly colder than the west, so outdoor ice skating often starts here first; wind off the Wadden Sea makes the coast feel colder than the temperature suggests. Drenthe's plateau is a little drier and more wooded.

May–September is the reliable window for biking, sailing and the islands. Winter is quiet and cheap but many lake-side businesses close; the Elfstedentocht ice-skating tour has not been held since 1997 and cannot be planned for.
