Northern Illinois is the part of the state north of I-80 and outside Chicagoland: Rockford, DeKalb, the Rock River Valley and the hilly Driftless northwest around Galena. It is a driving region — 9 of Illinois's 10 highest points sit here, 8 of them in Jo Daviess County. Come for state-park canyons, river bluffs and small historic towns, not for a city break. Two or three nights based in Rockford or Galena covers the highlights; a single day only works if you pick one anchor.
