  • Central America ↗Guatemala, El Salvador, Honduras and Nicaragua (CA-4) give one shared entry allowance, usually 90 days in total; leaving for Belize, Costa Rica or Mexico and coming back does not always reset it — check with immigration before a long stay.
  • Central America ↗Cross land borders in daylight and early in the day; many posts close or empty of transport by late afternoon, and the approaches are where robberies happen.
  • Central America ↗Several borders charge entry, exit or municipal fees in US dollars (Belize exit, Nicaragua entry and exit, Honduras entry); carry small, clean US notes and ask for a receipt.
  • Costa Rica ↗Check entry rules for your passport with Costa Rica's immigration authority (Migración) or a Costa Rican consulate; proof of onward travel is commonly required.
  • Costa Rica ↗Rental cars require mandatory local liability insurance, often not included in online quotes: check the full price before booking.
  • Costa Rica ↗Do not feed wildlife, including monkeys and coatis; it is illegal and harmful.
  • Costa Rica ↗Buy national park tickets (Manuel Antonio, Poás, Irazú and others) online from SINAC before you go; several parks do not sell at the gate and cap daily numbers.

North Costa Rica (Región Norte, also called Huetar Norte) is the Arenal volcano zone plus the wet lowlands toward the Nicaraguan border. La Fortuna is the most practical main base — the deepest supply of beds, food and tours — and the only one most travellers need. Everything else — Bijagua and Río Celeste, the Sarapiquí river country, the Caño Negro wetlands, the Miravalles hot springs — is a car trip or a long bus ride from there. Two bases maximum; the roads between them are slow.

La Fortuna 3 — volcano, hot springs, one waterfall or hanging-bridges day
5 nights
La Fortuna 3 + Bijagua 2 for Río Celeste and Tenorio
6 nights
La Fortuna 3 + Sarapiquí 2 + one night Quesada or Los Chiles if crossing to Nicaragua
  • La Fortuna to Bijagua, Sarapiquí or Los Chiles is 1.5–3 h each way on winding roads — a day trip there and back eats the day.
  • The Los Chiles / Las Tablillas border post to Nicaragua keeps limited hours (about 08:00–16:00) and cars cannot cross at the boat crossing — check before you commit.
  • Heavy rain can close secondary roads and river tours; build a spare half-day into any northern plan.

Bijagua de Upala / Río CelesteLa Fortuna minunknownWinding road each way — drive time is check; treat it as an overnight base rather than a day trip. Go early, the river colour fades after rain.
Caño Negro Wildlife RefugeLa Fortuna minunknownTime from La Fortuna is check and excludes the boat-tour transfer; most visitors join an organised tour rather than drive themselves. Wildlife is best in the dry months.

Bags between cities

Luggage forwarding is not a standard service in Costa Rica; plan to carry bags between bases or hire a shuttle that takes them with you.

La Fortuna / Arenal
Driest stretch is roughly December to April; the rest of the year is green and wet, with afternoon downpours. Arenal is often cloud-covered — mornings give the clearest views.
Sarapiquí and the northern lowlands
One of the wettest parts of the country; rain most months, so plan indoor and river activities with wet-weather backup.

Dry-season months (December–April) are also the busiest and priciest; book La Fortuna beds and hot springs ahead for those weeks.
