The Central Valley is where Costa Rica starts: SJO airport sits in Alajuela, San José is the transport hub, and four volcanoes and a ring of coffee towns are within 30–90 minutes of each other. It is not a beach destination and the weather is cooler and wetter than the coast. Treat it as a 2–3 night arrival base — one day for San José, one for a volcano or coffee town — then move on to Arenal, the Pacific or the Caribbean.
