North Bulgaria runs the width of the country between the Danube and the Balkan Mountains: Roman ruins at Ruse and Pleven, the medieval capital at Veliko Tarnovo, and the rock formations and fortress at Belogradchik in the west. Cities are 1.5–3 hours apart by bus or car, so pick two bases rather than moving every night. Trains exist but are slow; buses and a rented car do the work.

- North Bulgaria is the country's least developed region: outside Veliko Tarnovo, Ruse, Pleven and Vidin, English is thin and buses to villages run once or twice a day.
