Nipawin is a town of about 4,400 on the Saskatchewan River, between Tobin and Codette Lakes in northern Saskatchewan. It is a fishing, boating, camping and golf base rather than a sightseeing town. Most travellers come for the lake, the regional park and the river crossings, and stay one or two nights on the way to Prince Albert or The Pas.

A car is effectively required: sights, the regional park and the lake are 2–10 km apart and there is no town bus network. Highway 35 runs north–south and Highway 55 east–west through town. Taxis exist but are limited; check locally.

Safety

Nipawin is a small, low-crime town and generally safe for visitors. The real risks are long drives on empty highways, winter ice and cold, and water safety on Tobin and Codette Lakes — wear a life jacket and watch the weather.
  • Distances are long: Saskatoon is about 270 km away, Prince Albert about 90 min by car.
  • Winter driving is serious — snow, ice and very cold temperatures from Nov to Mar.
  • Some cabins and campgrounds are seasonal (roughly mid-May to end of Nov); book ahead in summer.
  • Cell coverage is fine in town but patchy on lake and bush roads; download offline maps.
