  • China ↗Foreign visitors must register their address with the police within 24 hours; hotels do it at check-in with your passport. Carry the original passport at all times: hotels, trains, museums, Tiananmen Square and police checks ask for it.
  • China ↗Set up Alipay or WeChat Pay with a foreign card before you fly. QR payment is the default in shops, taxis and many stalls, and some places refuse cash or a foreign card. Carry cash as a backup.
  • China ↗Google, WhatsApp, Instagram, Facebook, YouTube and many news sites are blocked. Use an eSIM with roaming (it routes through your home network) or install and test a VPN before you fly; VPN sites and app stores are hard to reach inside China, and only government-approved VPNs are officially permitted.

Ningbo is a 9.4-million-person port city on the East China Sea, 1–1.5 h by high-speed train from Hangzhou and about 2 h from Shanghai. The compact downtown (Haishu, Jiangbei, Yinzhou) holds China's oldest private library, treaty-port streets and a riverside art museum; the temples and kiln sites sit in the outer districts and need a half-day each. Two nights covers the centre and one temple run.

Getting around

Metro Lines 1–5 cover the centre and reach the station, airport and Yinzhou; fares are distance-based, roughly ¥2–7. Buses ¥1–2. Taxis start at ¥10 for 3 km plus a ¥2 fuel levy. Motorbikes are banned downtown. Outer sights (Tiantong, Ayuwang, Hemudu, Shanglin Lake) need a bus or taxi leg of 30–90 min.

Watch out

Safety

Ningbo is a low-crime city and safe to walk at night in the centre. The real risks are summer heat and typhoons, traffic when crossing roads, and unmarked bar tabs on Lao Waitan: ask the total before you order.
  • Summer is hot and humid with typhoon risk Jul–Sep; plan outdoor sights for early morning or evening.
  • Most museums close Mondays and shut around 16:30–17:00; last entry is often 30 min before.
  • Some sights are free but require ID sign-in at the gate — carry your passport.
  • Outer-district buses thin out after early evening; check the last return before you leave downtown.
  • Alipay or WeChat Pay is near-universal; set it up before you fly, cards work at big hotels only.
