Nimule

Nimule is a transit stop between Juba and Uganda, not a destination. One night max, for the border crossing or Nimule National Park.

Nimule is a small border town in Equatoria, South Sudan, with a national park and a few basic lodges. Most travellers pass through on the Juba–Kampala bus route. The town itself has no tourist infrastructure beyond a handful of guesthouses and bodaboda taxis. Plan for one night if you break the journey, or a half-day visit to the park.

  • Africa ↗When a route touches a yellow-fever country — even a transit of 12 hours or more — keep the original yellow card (ICVP) in your hand luggage; health desks and airlines can refuse boarding or entry without it.
  • Africa ↗Nine African countries on this site have no trip line because governments advise against travel; several others have no-go regions. Read your government's advice for every country on the route before paying deposits.
  • East Africa ↗Carry the yellow fever certificate on every leg of a multi-country trip: Uganda and Burundi check it for all arrivals, and a stop in Kenya or Ethiopia makes the next border ask for it.
  • East Africa ↗Advice for Ethiopia, Somaliland, Eritrea, Somalia, South Sudan and the Congo border areas can change within days; read your government's page the week you fly and before every regional flight.
  • East Africa ↗Price park, reserve and permit fees before comparing lodges: they are charged per person per day, often with VAT, and are fixed whatever bed you choose.
  • South Sudan ↗Check your own government travel advice for South Sudan before any booking; advice depends on your passport and changes without notice.
  • South Sudan ↗An e-visa and proof of yellow fever vaccination are required before arrival; permits for movement and photography have been enforced (check).
  • South Sudan ↗Confirm that your travel insurance and medical evacuation cover apply to South Sudan before you rely on it.

Watch out

Safety

Nimule is remote and near an active border. Check your government's travel advice for South Sudan before any trip. Petty crime and road banditry are possible; travel by day and with a group if possible.
  • Road between Gulu and Nimule is terrible due to flooding in northern Uganda; check conditions before travel.
  • Bus from Kampala departs at 03:00 with an overnight stop in Yumbe; bring food and water.
  • The manager at Unity Lodge may inspect your luggage for weapons.
  • Power at Horizon Guest is only from about 19:00 to 01:00.
