Netherlands in October: what to expect

October is the month the Dutch autumn arrives properly. The first half can still deliver mild, bright days; the second half brings more wind, especially on the coast and the Wadden islands. Expect changeable days rather than a solid week of rain: a wet morning, a dry afternoon, a shower at 4pm.

Daytime highs sit in the low-to-mid teens and nights drop into single figures (2026 estimate — check the KNMI forecast before you travel). The wind makes it feel colder than the number suggests, particularly in Amsterdam, Rotterdam, The Hague and along the North Sea. Inland and in Limburg it is slightly milder and less windy.

Daylight falls fast through the month, and the clocks go back on the last Sunday of October, so sunset comes before 18:00 in the final week.

October is mid-season. The summer rush is over, Keukenhof is long closed, and the big Amsterdam museums are calmer than in July or August. Popular ticketed sights still sell out on busy days, so book timed slots online ahead (check current rules).

The exception is Amsterdam Dance Event, usually in the third week of October, when the city hosts one of the world's largest electronic music gatherings. Hotel rates in Amsterdam spike for those days and beds go early. If you are not going to ADE, either book months ahead or stay in Haarlem, Utrecht or Leiden and take the train in.

The Dutch autumn school holiday falls in mid-to-late October, region by region (check exact weeks), which lifts prices at family destinations such as Efteling and the coast for a week or so. Outside those windows, hotel prices sit clearly below summer and above the deep winter months.

Amsterdam Dance Event (ADE) is the headline: several days of club nights and conferences across the city, usually mid-to-late October. Dates shift each year — check before booking.

Museumnacht Amsterdam, when museums stay open late with performances and DJs, usually falls in late October or early November. Amsterdam Light Festival does not start until late November or December, so October visitors miss it.

The Amsterdam Marathon is normally run in the third weekend of October, with road closures around the route. The Dutch autumn school holidays run in different weeks for the north, middle and south regions, so family attractions are busy in those windows rather than all month. Sinterklaas arrivals and Christmas markets are November and December events, not October.

Cities are the answer this month. Amsterdam's museums, brown cafés and canals work in any weather, and you can duck into a café between showers. Utrecht is compact and easy on foot; Haarlem and Leiden are quieter alternatives with good museums and quick train links to Amsterdam.

Rotterdam and The Hague suit a rainy day well: museums, markets, architecture and indoor food halls. For something greener, the Veluwe national parks are a good bet for autumn colour in mid-to-late October, but you need a dry window and proper shoes — bike hire there is weather-dependent (check opening and hire conditions).

Skip the Wadden islands and the North Sea beaches unless you are going for storm-watching: ferries to Texel and Schiermonnikoog still run, but beach days are done for the year and boat trips wind down after September (check timetables). Keukenhof is closed until spring.

Layer for cool, windy weather: a waterproof shell with a hood, a warm mid-layer, and shoes that survive wet cobbles. An umbrella is useful in the city but turns inside out on the coast. Bring a small daypack cover or dry bag for camera gear.

Evenings are cold enough for a proper jacket, and Dutch cafés and restaurants are often draughty, so a sweater earns its place. If you plan to cycle, add gloves and a light beanie. Museums are warm, so layers you can remove matter more than one heavy coat.

September is the better shoulder month: milder, longer days, still green, and Heritage Days open private buildings on the second weekend. If your dates are flexible and you want autumn without the storms, September wins.
