  • East Asia ↗Every border in East Asia is a full international border, Hong Kong and Macau included: an entry permission for one never covers the next.
  • East Asia ↗Ferries between Korea, Japan and China cancel in rough seas and typhoons; keep a flight or a spare day behind every sea leg.
  • Japan ↗IC cards (ICOCA/Suica) are topped up with cash at station machines.
  • Japan ↗Smoking while walking is banned in most city centres; use designated areas.
  • Japan ↗Shinkansen bags 160–250 cm (L+W+H) need a seat reserved with the oversized-baggage area.
  • Kyushu ↗The Kyushu Rail Pass covers JR Kyushu lines and both Kyushu Shinkansen, but not the Sanyo Shinkansen to Hakata; it is sold to visitors on tourist visas.
  • Kyushu ↗The Kyushu Expressway Pass (KEP) is for foreign drivers renting a car; city expressways are excluded.

Nagasaki Prefecture is a long, thin region on Kyushu's west coast with a single Shinkansen connection (via Hakata) and a set of islands that take ferries to reach. The city of Nagasaki itself holds the atomic-bomb museum, Dejima and Glover Garden; the Gotō Islands, Iki and Tsushima are each a separate day or overnight. Sleep in Nagasaki city for 2–3 nights, use Sasebo as a base for the western coast and the Gotō Islands, and treat the islands as day-trips or one-night stays.

Night sequences

3 nights
Nagasaki 3 nights; day-trip to Shimabara or Gotō Islands (jetfoil).
5 nights
Nagasaki 3 + Sasebo 2; day-trip to Gotō Islands and Iki.
  • The Shinkansen does not run directly to Nagasaki; you must change at Hakata (Fukuoka) to the Kamome limited-express.
  • Ferries to the islands are infrequent and weather-dependent; always check the forecast and book ahead in summer.
  • The atomic-bomb museum is a heavy experience; allow at least 2 hours and plan a quiet afternoon afterwards.
