Mumbai in March: what to expect

March is the last comfortable month before the pre-monsoon build-up. Days are hot and dry, humidity is moderate by Mumbai standards, and rain is very unlikely — the south-west monsoon does not arrive until June, when the city takes over 2 m of rain in a normal year.

The practical pattern is a hot afternoon and a pleasant evening. Sea breeze keeps the coast and Marine Drive tolerable, while inland areas such as Andheri and the national park feel hotter. Air quality is usually better than the November–January smog window but can still be hazy.

Treat the numbers below as 2026 estimates for planning, not a forecast: check the India Meteorological Department and a live forecast in the week before you fly.

March sits in the middle band. The foreign winter season has thinned out, domestic school holidays are mostly over, and hotel rates in south Mumbai and Bandra usually fall back from their January–February highs. Weekends still fill with domestic travellers, and the last week of the month can tighten as Easter and spring breaks approach.

Book transport early anyway. Long-distance trains out of Mumbai — Konkan Railway services to Goa, and routes to Pune and the Deccan — sell out days ahead, and the Mumbai–Goa airfare rises sharply around public holidays. Local trains, the metro and the suburban network are cheap and frequent; use them for the airport run and for Bandra–Churchgate hops.

Mumbai's calendar is not fixed to March the way Delhi's is to February or Kolkata's to October. The two things worth checking are Holi, which falls in March in some years and is a public holiday with limited services and colour-throwing in the streets, and the tail of the cultural season — classical music, theatre and gallery openings at venues such as the NCPA and the Jehangir Art Gallery usually wind down by the end of the month.

Ganesh Chaturthi, the city's biggest festival, is in August–September, and Diwali is in October–November, so neither falls in March. Confirm exact 2026 dates with the Maharashtra tourism department or a local listings site before you build a trip around them.

Structure the day around heat. Do outdoor sights before 10am or after 5pm: the Gateway of India and Colaba Causeway at sunrise, Marine Drive and Chowpatty at sunset, and the Kanheri caves or Sanjay Gandhi National Park early, when the trails are still cool and the wildlife is active.

Keep the middle of the day indoors or in shade: the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya (Prince of Wales Museum), the Dr Bhau Daji Lad Museum in Byculla, the Jehangir Art Gallery, and the air-conditioned markets and malls. Elephanta Island is doable in March but the boat ride and the climb are exposed — go on the first ferry and carry water.

For a break from the city, the Konkan coast south of Mumbai is rated at its best in March, and the hill stations of the Western Ghats — Lonavala, Mahabaleshwar, Matheran — are still pleasant before the pre-monsoon heat. Alibag and the beaches near Murud are the closest sea escapes.

Light, loose cotton clothes in light colours; a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen; a refillable water bottle, since dehydration is the main March risk; and a light layer for air-conditioned trains, malls and cinemas. Comfortable walking shoes for the uneven pavements, plus sandals for the beach.

If your trip overlaps Holi, pack clothes you do not mind staining and a waterproof phone pouch. A small umbrella is optional — rain is unlikely, but the odd pre-monsoon shower can appear in the last days of the month.

February is the better month if you want the same dry weather with cooler days and a fuller events calendar, at higher prices. April is the step down: the plains of India reach 40 °C, Mumbai turns humid and sticky, and the coast stops being comfortable — the parent country guide rates April as caution and May as avoid.

If you are flexible, aim for late January or February. If March is what your dates allow, it still works: go early in the month, keep afternoons indoors, and book trains and flights before you arrive.
