Mumbai in April: what to expect

April is the last full month of Mumbai's dry season. Daytime highs sit around 33 °C and nights rarely drop below the mid-20s, so the heat does not break after dark. Humidity climbs through the month, which makes 33 °C feel heavier than the number suggests, and the sea breeze that cools the city in March is weaker and less reliable.

Rain is unusual in April; the south-west monsoon normally reaches Mumbai in June, and the parent India climate table lists the Konkan coast as hot from April and wet from June. Expect hazy, bright days rather than clear blue ones — dust and humidity hang in the air, and the light is softest in the early morning.

The practical shape of an April day: start at first light, be indoors or in shade between about 11am and 4pm, and go out again in the evening, when the seafront at Marine Drive and Bandra fills up. Air conditioning is the single thing worth paying more for in a hotel this month.

April is one of the two quietest months in Mumbai, along with May. Domestic holiday travel is low, the foreign winter season has ended, and the city's own residents are more focused on escaping the heat than on sightseeing. That means shorter queues at the Gateway of India, Elephanta Island ferries and the major museums, and easier walk-in tables at popular restaurants.

Hotel rates follow the same curve. Rooms in Colaba, Fort and Bandra that are expensive from November to February are at or near their annual floor in April, and the parent India data rates the month low on both crowds and price. Flights are usually cheaper too, though the last week of the month can tighten if school holidays or Eid fall there.

The trade-off is comfort. You are trading a pleasant 30 °C February for a sticky 33 °C April in exchange for lower prices and thinner crowds. If you are heat-tolerant and mainly want the city — food, markets, architecture, museums — that is a good trade. If you want long outdoor days, it is not.

Mumbai's calendar in April is thin on fixed city-wide events. The big religious festivals — Ganesh Chaturthi, Navratri and Diwali — fall later in the year, and Holi is in March. What April does bring is a run of cultural programming before the monsoon: gallery openings, theatre and classical music in the south of the city, and the tail end of the outdoor concert season.

The date that moves each year is Eid al-Fitr, which can land in April depending on the lunar calendar. When it does, expect a public holiday, heavy demand on transport, and a lively evening around Mohammed Ali Road and other Muslim neighbourhoods. Confirm the exact date locally, since it is set by moon sighting.

Also check the school holiday calendar: if the last week of April coincides with a break, family attractions such as the zoo, the aquarium and Elephanta Island get noticeably busier.

Plan April around shade, water and air conditioning. The classic south Mumbai circuit — Gateway of India, Colaba Causeway, the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Vastu Sangrahalaya museum, and the Gothic and Art Deco waterfront — works best from about 7am to 10am, then again after 5pm. The museum is a good midday refuge.

Elephanta Island is still worth the ferry, but go on the first boat of the morning and take water; the climb to the caves is exposed. For a cooler half-day, the Sanjay Gandhi National Park at Borivali has tree cover and the Kanheri caves, though the walk is still hot by noon.

Evenings belong to the seafront: Marine Drive, Chowpatty and Bandra's Bandstand and Carter Road. This is also the best month for the city's food — street stalls, Irani cafés and seafood restaurants — because you can eat late without the monsoon rain. Pack for heat and humidity rather than rain. Loose cotton or linen, light colours, a hat, sunglasses and high-factor sunscreen are the basics. Bring a refillable water bottle — you will drink far more than usual — and a small towel or scarf, since you will sweat through a shirt by mid-morning.

Footwear should be breathable and easy to remove, because you will take shoes off at temples and mosques. Add a light layer for heavily air-conditioned restaurants, trains and offices, where the temperature drop can be sharp. A small umbrella is optional in April; it is more useful from June.

March is the better version of April: still dry, a degree or two cooler, and busier. February is the best month of the Mumbai season, with pleasant temperatures and high prices. May is hotter still and the last chance to travel cheaply before the monsoon; June brings the rain and a completely different city.
