Morenci is a company copper town on US 191 in eastern Arizona, paired with Clifton next door as the Clifton-Morenci district. Copper was found here in 1872 and mining began in 1873; the open pit is the largest copper mine in the US. There is no public transport and almost no lodging, so this is a one-night, car-based stop, not a base.

Safety

Small-town safe, but this is a working industrial district: stay on marked roads and overlooks, keep clear of mine property, and treat summer heat and monsoon flooding as the real hazards.
  • Mine tours need reservations and run on a set schedule; children under 9 are not permitted on the tour.
  • Summer daytime heat is extreme; carry water and do not hike Limestone Canyon or Mares Bluff at midday.
  • Fuel and groceries are limited: the only grocery store is in Morenci, so fill up in Safford or Clifton before you commit.
  • Cell coverage is patchy on US 191 north of Clifton; download offline maps.
  • US 191 north over the Coronado Trail is remote with few services — do not treat it as a quick shortcut.
