The Mogollon Rim is a 300 km escarpment where the Colorado Plateau drops 300–600 m to the desert floor, so the whole region is one long viewpoint with ponderosa pine on top and saguaro below. There is no town on the rim itself and no public transport: you sleep in Payson, Show Low or a gateway town, then drive the Rim Road (FR 300) and the paved overlooks. Two nights is enough for the rim; add nights if you want the lakes, the Apache reservations or the Coronado Trail.

Night sequences

The Coronado Trail (US 191) between Morenci and Hannagan Meadow has no shoulders and many hairpin turns — do not drive it at night or in a storm.
Summer thunderstorms on the rim bring lightning and flash floods in the canyons; be off exposed overlooks by early afternoon.
I-40 above the rim gets heavy snow in winter; carry chains or check closures.
