Missouri is two cities plus a lot of water and cave country between them. St. Louis and Kansas City are 4 hours apart by car or about 4 hours by Amtrak's Missouri River Runner, so pick one as a base and treat the rest as a separate road trip. St. Louis gives you the Gateway Arch, Forest Park and the Mississippi; Kansas City gives you barbecue, the Crossroads and the Power & Light district. The Ozarks — float rivers, show caves, the Ozark Trail — need a car and 2–3 nights of their own.
