Rules in force · 11Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window…
- Europe ↗Non-EU visitors get 90 days in any rolling 180-day window, counted across all 29 Schengen states together — not per country; the Entry/Exit System now logs each crossing, so an overstay is detected automatically.
- Europe ↗On the first Schengen entry since EES began, non-EU travellers give four fingerprints and a face photo at the border instead of a passport stamp; there is nothing to apply for or pay in advance.
- Britain and Ireland ↗Neither the UK nor Ireland is part of Schengen: days spent here do not count towards the 90/180-day Schengen limit, and a Schengen visa does not admit you to either country.
- Britain and Ireland ↗The island of Ireland runs on two currencies: euro in the Republic, pound sterling in Northern Ireland and Great Britain. Carry a card that pays in both without fees.
- Britain and Ireland ↗Both islands drive on the left. Speed limits are in miles per hour in the UK (including Northern Ireland) and in kilometres per hour in the Republic of Ireland.
- United Kingdom ↗Most visitors who do not need a UK visa now need an Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) before travelling; this includes EU nationals. Irish citizens are exempt. Check the UK government site for your passport.
- United Kingdom ↗The UK is outside the EU and the Schengen area; a Schengen visa is not valid for the UK.
- United Kingdom ↗Driving is on the left; London has congestion and emissions charges for most vehicles, so do not drive in the city.
- Wales ↗Welsh is co-official; road signs are bilingual and Welsh is the first language in parts of the north and west.
- Wales ↗Drive on the left; distances and speed limits in miles and mph.
- Wales ↗Same UK visa and immigration rules as England; no border control crossing from England.
Mid Wales is the empty middle of the country: over a third of Wales's land area, about a fifteenth of its people, no motorway and no dual carriageway except a short bypass at Brecon. The Cambrian Mountains run down the centre, the highest point is Pumlumon Fawr at 752 m, and the roads across them are few. That emptiness is the point. It also means the region rewards a car and punishes a tight schedule: two nights minimum, three if you want the Elan Valley and the coast.

- 4 nights
- Add a night near Brecon for the national park before heading south
- Mid Wales has no motorways or dual carriageways apart from a short bypass at Brecon; allow more time than the distance suggests.
- Mobile signal is patchy in the Cambrian Mountains; download offline maps before you set off.
- Many rural attractions and cafes close out of season or on weekdays; check before driving.

- Cambrian Mountains and uplands
- Wettest ground in the region; rain gear and waterproof boots matter more than any month choice. Hill roads can be icy December to February.
- Coast and lowlands
- Milder and drier than the hills; sea breezes keep summer days cooler.
May to September is the reliable window for walking and the coast. School holidays in late July and August fill the few beds in Aberystwyth and around Rhayader, so book ahead.

| Shrewsbury (England) | Welshpool, Newtown, Caersws, Aberystwyth | Cambrian Line train | ~2 h to Aberystwyth | Some services start from Birmingham. The line follows the Severn valley towns; sit on the left for the estuary approach. |
| Swansea | Shrewsbury via Llandrindod Wells and Knighton | Heart of Wales Line train | ~4 h end to end | Slow by design: gradients and curves over 120 miles. A scenic ride and a lifeline for the villages on the route. |
| Cardiff or Birmingham | Mid Wales | Fly in, then train or car | ~2 h 30 by road from Cardiff, ~2 h from Birmingham | There are no airports or air services in Mid Wales; Cardiff and Birmingham are the nearest. |
| North or south Wales | Mid Wales | A470 | single carriageway throughout | From the English border use the A40, A44 or A458; from Swansea or Wrexham the A483. |
