South Wales runs from the Severn Bridge to the Irish Sea ferries: two cities (Cardiff, Swansea), a coal-and-steel valleys belt, castle country inland and a coast that gets better the further west you go. Trains link Cardiff, Newport, Bridgend, Port Talbot, Neath and Swansea on one main line; almost everything else — Gower beaches, Pembrokeshire, the Wye Valley, the castles at Carreg Cennen and Kidwelly — needs a car or a slow bus. Two nights in Cardiff covers the city and one day trip. Four to five nights with a car covers the coast.
