Route map
Two shapes work in 10 days. The Yucatán loop is the easiest: one arrival airport, short hops, beaches at the end. The capital-and-Oaxaca route is the food and culture version, with one flight in the middle.

The Yucatán loop below is the default 10-day plan. Times are door-to-door and assume you book the morning departure. All times and fares are 2026 estimates — check live schedules before booking.
- Capital-and-Oaxaca version: Mexico City nights 1–4 (Teotihuacán as a day trip), fly on day 5, Oaxaca nights 5–8 (Monte Albán, a mezcal village), day 9 free, fly home from Oaxaca on day 10 — often via Mexico City, so allow half a day.
- Book the Chichén Itzá and Uxmal entries and the Frida Kahlo Museum days ahead; museums close Mondays.
- Start ruins at opening; shade is scarce and midday heat is the real cost.

Getting around
Fly between regions. Mexico City to Oaxaca is about an hour in the air (check); the bus is 6–7 hours each way (check), which eats two days of a 10-day trip. Oaxaca to Mérida flights often connect via Mexico City, so allow half a day.
Inside the Yucatán, ADO buses cover Cancún, Mérida, Valladolid, Tulum and Bacalar, with air conditioning and reserved seats. The Tren Maya links several of the same stops; check the current timetable and station transfers before you build a day around it. Colectivos and local buses handle short hops such as Valladolid to Chichén Itzá. A rental car pays off for Uxmal, cenotes and Bacalar, but pick it up outside Cancún's hotel zone and read the insurance terms.
In Mexico City, the Metro and Metrobús are cheap and fast; use ride-hailing apps at night. In Oaxaca, the centre is walkable and taxis cover the rest.

Where to stay
Match the bed to the day plan, not to the best photos. In the Yucatán loop, Mérida's Centro gives you markets and evening food on foot; Valladolid's centre puts you 45 minutes from Chichén Itzá; Bacalar's lagoon side is quiet, Tulum's beach strip is expensive and its town is cheaper.
In Mexico City, Roma and Condesa are for food and walking, Centro for museums and the Zócalo, Coyoacán for a slower base near the Frida Kahlo Museum. In Oaxaca, stay within the Centro Histórico so markets, mezcalerías and Monte Albán buses are all close.
- Book Mérida and Tulum beds early for Dec–Apr; prices jump in the Christmas and Easter weeks.
- One night near Cancún airport at the end removes the last-morning panic.

Variations
If you have 7 days, cut the Yucatán loop to Cancún, Valladolid and Tulum, or keep Mexico City and Oaxaca only. With 14 days you can add a third region: Mexico City, Oaxaca and the Yucatán, flying Oaxaca to Mérida and out of Cancún.
Swap the Yucatán for the Pacific if you want surf and whales: Puerto Vallarta or La Paz and Los Cabos, both best Nov–Apr. Swap in Chiapas if you want highlands and jungle ruins: San Cristóbal de las Casas and Palenque, 4 nights, Nov–Apr.
