Things to do in Lyon with kids: best attractions and family tips

Lyon works for families because the big-ticket items are cheap or free and close together. The park is the anchor; add one indoor attraction and one food stop, and you have a full day without a long transfer.

Parc de la Tête d'Or is the single best free stop: 117 hectares with a lake, rowing boats, pony rides, a small free zoo and several playgrounds. Allow two to three hours, more if the weather is good.

For a rainy or hot afternoon, Mini World Lyon in Vaulx-en-Velin is a 1:87 miniature city with moving trains and cars, indoors and stroller-friendly. Musée des Confluences is the science and natural history pick, with a glass building kids tend to like as much as the exhibits.

Older kids (8+) do well on the Vieux Lyon and Fourvière side: the funicular up to the basilica, the Roman theatres, and the Parc des Hauteurs. The Gallo-Roman Museum (Lugdunum) is next to the theatres and has models and games.

For a half-day out of the centre, the Grand Parc Miribel Jonage east of the city has beaches, a lake and bike hire in summer. It needs a car or a longer transit ride.

Lyon's family attractions are mid-priced by French standards. Budget roughly €25–40 per adult for a day that mixes the free park with one paid museum and public transport; children are usually cheaper or free.

Many museums are free for under-18s and for EU residents under 26, but this varies by site, so check each one before you go. The city's own museums often have free first-Sunday or reduced hours; confirm on the day.

Opening hours shift by season, and several places close on Mondays or between noon and 14:00. Treat every time in the table as a check, not a promise.

Lyon sits about 2 hours from Paris by TGV, with direct trains from the airport to Part-Dieu and Perrache. From the stations, TCL metro and tram lines reach most family stops without a car.

For Parc de la Tête d'Or, use metro A to Masséna or Charpennes, or bus lines along the park edge. Mini World needs tram or bus toward Vaulx-en-Velin; check the exact stop and walking time, as it is not central.

Musée des Confluences is on tram T1 at Musée des Confluences stop. Vieux Lyon is on metro D, with the funicular from Vieux Lyon station up to Fourvière.

A car is only worth it for Grand Parc Miribel Jonage or a day out of the city. Parking in central Lyon is expensive and tight.

Eat early. French restaurants often open at 19:00–19:30, which suits younger kids better than a late dinner. Bakeries and markets cover a fast picnic lunch.

Bring a carrier rather than a stroller for Vieux Lyon and Croix-Rousse. The traboules and slopes have cobbles and stairs that make wheels hard work.

Public toilets are limited; use museum and park facilities when you see them. Carry water in summer, when afternoons regularly pass 30 °C.

Book Mini World and any weekend museum slot ahead in school holidays. Weekday mornings are quietest.

April to June and September to October are the best family months: mild, walkable, and the park is at its best. July and August are hot and busy, so plan indoor or water-based afternoons.

December brings the Festival of Lights (Fête des Lumières), which is spectacular but very crowded; go early in the evening with kids and expect packed transit.
